Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good instrument to engage in activism. DuVernay learned to be socially mindful by her mother. While DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would influence her later on to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash at the home of one of the jury. As a result of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
